Who you are matters

Who you are matters. I love this quote I recently found:

“You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the people you meet, the dreams you have, and the conversations you engage in. You are what you take from these. You are the sound of the ocean, the breath of the fresh air, the brightest light, and the darkest corner. You are a collective of every experience you have had in your life. You are every single second of every day. So, drown yourself in a sea of knowledge and existence. Let the words run through your veins, and the colors fill your mind until there is nothing left to do but explode. There are no wrong answers. Inspiration is everything.”- Jac Vanek

I am unsure about the “exploding” part, but I love the rest. You are the sum of all your past experiences and connections, and I would add your ancestral roots.

Back in 2009, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave an incredible TED talk about the danger of a single story. The talk addresses and warns us that if we only listen to a single story about a person, place, or culture, we risk vital misunderstanding and harm.

You can cause yourself harm if you do not consider all your life experiences when you are embarking on a new chapter or life transition. It is vital that you stitch together all your chapters and experiences to create the foundation to help you find clarity and inspiration to embark on your next chapter.

It is a huge gift to yourself and your life when you can deeply self-reflect on the beautiful, complex human that you are. A homework assignment I love to give clients is to have them do a life-work inventory. It can be enlightening to remember all the different parts of your life and who you are as a total sum.

The moon is a reminder that no matter what phase I am in, I am still whole.” -Unknown

As we enter Valentine’s Day tomorrow, I encourage you to love your story, who you are, and where you came from to arrive at this moment. Anything can be faced when we come from love. I do not like the Hallmark Valentine’s Day hype, but I love to love and receive love. May you love all your parts and life chapters and know that any change is possible when you embrace who you are.
